Activities Organized in Cheng Yu Tung College in 2013/14 Second Semester
1. Leadership Training Camp for House Association
The leadership training camp for House Association successfully served the following purposes, (1) training and improving the planning, leadership, obedience and communication skills of the HA;(2) building team spirit among the members of HA and (3)planning and preparation for the coming semester.
2. Outstanding Series: Macau and Hong Kong Poetry Recital
After the successful poetry recital held in the first semester, Cheng Yu Tung College invited 4 well-known poets, Wu Yin Ching, Wong Leung Wo, Ling Ku and Un Sio San to read poems with our students again. 8 students read poems of the poets. The 4 poets were impressed by the performance of our students.
3. The Third High Table Dinner
CYTC held its third High Table Dinner on 5 March. Professor Liu Liang was the honored guest speaker for the High Table Dinner. Professor Liu is the Rector of Macau University of Science and Technology and he is also a well-known scholar and Chinese medical doctor. Another honored guest is a local Portuguese entrepreneur Mr. António Trindade who instills environment concepts into his enterprises. Other guests included the Director of the Lotus TV Macau, Li Zisong, the Vice Rector(administration) Dr. Lai Iat Long, Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration Prof. SO Yuk-Chow, the Principal of Sheng Kung Hui Choi Kou School, Dr. Chan Chi Kwan, and other professors and heads from UM and the Chair of House Association of East Asia College.
4. Retreat for Resident Tutors
The retreat for resident tutor (RT) successfully served the following purposes, (1)Training and improving the planning, leadership and counseling skills of the RTs; (2) Reflection and sharing or work in the 1st semester of 2013/2014 (3) Building team spirit among the RTs and (4)Planning and preparation for the coming semester and next academic year.
5. CYTC Outstanding Series – Famous Chinese Writer Mrs. Xu Xiaobin
Ms. Xu Xiaobin, a famous Chinese writer and playwright, was invited by CYTC to have two talks and one novel writing workshop. She shared her life experiences with the audience, and also commented on several novels written by CYTC students and encouraged them to keep writing in order to become better writers.
6. Mindfulness Meditation Workshop
To reduce the work and study stress, we invited our College Fellow Prof. Jin from Faculty of Education to share and teach college staff and students how to meditate. Mindfulness is a type of meditation that essentially involves focusing on your mind on the present. To be mindful is to be aware of your thoughts and actions in the present, without judging yourself. Prof. Jin did provide a very useful way for us to relax.
7. Prof. Yu Kwang Chung Poetry Recital– CYTC and Chinese Department Joint Activity
6 students from CYTC and 5 from Chinese Department read 18 poems written by Prof. Yu. The students’ performances were impressive. Their touching recital accompanied by background images and music moved all of the audiences. Prof. Yu said he enjoyed the recital very much and that students’ recital and background images form deep alleys where he found his past.
8. “How to have an intimate relationship and deal with break-up” workshop
Intimacy versus isolation matters in psychosocial development. This stage takes place during young adulthood. During this period of time, the major conflict centers on forming intimate, loving relationships with other people. We invited the lecturer JoJo Lam from the Counseling Center to conduct this workshop for our students.
9. The Myth and Wisdom of Languages
Date: 14 /04/2014
Professor Xu Jie shared his understanding of linguist studies. He used examples of daily life to explain how to learn a foreign language well, and why it’s difficult to learn it after 13 years old. Students felt the talk was quite helpful for them in their foreign language studies.
10. CYTC Outstanding Series –Prof. Lee Chack Fan
Prof. Lee Chack Fan, Director of HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education and Chair Professor of Geotechnical Engineering, University of Hong Kong gave our students two talks in April. One was about China’s water resources. He shared with students that China was facing a severe water scarcity issue in water resources and it’s getting more serious because of rampant economic growth. The other talk was about his career path development. Students benefited his talk not only from academic knowledge, but also from his personal life experience.
11. Visit to Taiwan Residential Colleges
To learn and exchange ideas to other residential colleges, a delegation headed by Master Chung went to Taichung and Taipei, Taiwan. Delegation members included Resident Fellow Diane Lu , Resident Tutor Mr. Fan and 7 House Association members. The delegation visited Po-Ya School in Tunghai University and Chengchi College in National Chengchi University.
12. Photo Club Exhibition
After three workshops on photo taking, the Photo Club held a photo exhibition. The theme was “Spring”. Students, RTs and College staff took photos to explain their understanding of spring. More than 20 photos were selected for exhibition. The donor, Mr. Cheng, also sent his two photos for the exhibition. The exhibition was quite successful, and students’ potential in photo taking had been explored and performed well.
13. The Fourth High Table Dinner
That was the last High Table Dinner of the 2nd semester. The speaker was Professor Morton Holbrook. His topic is Sino – US relations. He recalled the history of the relations development, and argued that the story of China’s economic development is also the story of the growth of US-China relations. Students learn Sino – US relations from the perspective of an American diplomat.
14. Labor Education
CYTC held the first college wide clean-up program in the 1st semester. In order to continue the spirit of loving your living environment, we kept encouraging and advising our students to clean up their pantries, personal living space and bathrooms on their own. Through this program, they also learned how to work together to make their livings in a better condition.
1. Sports Day-Badminton Tournament and Fun Games
The inter-college committee held a badminton tournament to promote sports and to facilitate friendship among students in different colleges. Our college actively participated in the activity and won the third prize.
